WHY JOIN LILONGWE WILDLIFE TRUST?

SUPPORT A HIGH IMPACT CHARITY

Our work has grown in response to the emerging conservation challenges and now spans wildlife rescue and welfare, education, advocacy, justice and research. We are the only NGO sanctioned by the government to conduct wildlife rescues nationwide and we are mandated to operate by the Judiciary, Police Service and Departments of Wildlife, Forestry, Fisheries and Education, to name just a few – thus playing a central role in Malawi’s fight to protect its wildlife and habitats. We’re also proud to count HRH the Duke of Gloucester, Virginia McKenna (OBE) and Ian Redmond (OBE) among our patrons.

You’re part of the bigger picture: Whilst you work directly with animals rescued from the bushmeat or pet trade you can be sure we are tackling the roots of the problem through sensitising local communities, changing legislation and supporting law enforcement. Although many of our overheads are funded through grants from international governments and charities, almost all of our wildlife rescue and welfare projects are made possible thanks to the donations that are included in the placement costs.

LEARN NEW SKILLS

We strive for operational excellence and we’re accredited and audited by the top international welfare and conservation bodies. The Wildlife Centre, for example, is the only sanctuary in the world to have obtained all three accreditations from the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA), the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) and the Born Free Foundation PAW scheme. As a result you learn ‘best practice’, working alongside a knowledgeable and passionate team of local and international experts who are keen to share their experiences. Please do share your goals and ambitions with us – some of the permanent team joined us as volunteers, so who knows where your placement will lead!

EXPLORE THE WARM HEART OF AFRICA

Being thrown together with people from different backgrounds and nationalities, you’re bound to make lifelong friends and we hope that you stay part of the LWT family long after you have left us. Volunteers who joined the team a decade ago are still out there spreading the word and holding the odd fundraiser for us.
