Malawi has made history by securing the first conviction under the ban against thin plastics that was introduced last year.
In March 2020 Qingdao Plastics Ltd. was ordered to close after it was found to be producing thin plastics less than 60 microns, contrary to the stipulations of the ban. However, despite the order, the company continued to produce thin plastics.
The owner of the company pleaded guilty and was convicted by the Lilongwe Magistrates Court on 5th August 2020. Sentencing is scheduled for 27th August 2020.
