The global plastic crisis is one of the greatest challenges facing our planet.
In Malawi, we have a chance to make a real difference. On 16 April, the Supreme Court will decide whether to implement a national ban on the production and use of thin plastics. We believe this would be a huge step forwards in the fight against plastic pollution, which poses a serious risk to people, animals and the environment.
In Malawi, estimates suggest that plastic waste could make up as much as 30% of the total waste generated in high income areas, 20% in middle income areas and about 8% in low income areas. And, as the country has one of the highest urbanisation rates in Africa, the production and use of plastic is set to boom in the coming years.
We want to hear your thoughts on this issue. Do you agree with a ban on thin plastics? Who do you think is responsible for tackling plastic pollution? What are the solutions?
