Our WERU team were called out yesterday to help this young bull elephant in Kasungu National Park who had been shot in the leg by a poacher and was limping badly as a result. Removing a snare or cleaning a wound is a more straightforward operation than removing a bullet because it is impossible to tell exactly where it is and how deep the bullet has gone. You can sometimes cause more damage than good by digging for a bullet, as further issues and infections can be caused. Especially in a fully grown elephant!
So, in consultation with other vets, the team have agreed to wait it out a little longer to see whether his condition improves or deteriorates over the coming week before doing a knock down. Thanks to Remmie and Matt for your work here.
