About Our Volunteer Programme
Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is an award-winning project, reputed by PASA as one of Africa’s best sanctuaries, and houses almost 200 rescued wild animals, including carnivores, primates, reptiles and antelopes. As a volunteer you can get involved with various aspects of animal care, from feeding the animals to helping with releases. Whilst we operate a hands-off policy in most cases, orphans in particular need special attention and round the clock care to ensure that they have the best possible chance of rehabilitation, so you may well be stepping in with surrogacy work and providing all aspects of care in those early days.
Volunteers are able to contribute to the full rehabilitation process of the animals, from orphan care to integrations to observations to reintroductions. Our goal is to release animals back into the wild for every case possible so it can be an incredibly rewarding experience to see their progress and know that you have played a vital part in their journey back to the wild. Qualified vets and vet nurses are an asset to our volunteer programme. We deal with regular intakes, health checks and routine diagnosics, as well as wildlife emergencies.
Volunteers can also take part in our education programme and community initiatives that are run by the Trust, all designed to reduce human-wildlife conflict and promote sustainable livelihoods to protect habitats shared by people and wildlife. Anyone with experience in website design, PR, events, photography or documentary making would also be very welcome. Depending on the demands of the work going on at the Centre there is also the opportunity to volunteer at our partner project, Kuti, a beautiful wildlife reserve just two hours from Lilongwe and home to large mammals such as giraffe, zebra and sable.
Volunteer with us and not only will you make a real difference to the wildlife of Malawi, but you’ll also have the chance to learn new skills, enhance your CV (if that’s what you want) and have a fantastic African adventure at the same time. We can accommodate up to 15 volunteers at a time, and there’s no doubting that you’ll leave with new friends and desperate to come back, as many volunteers do!
With vast landscapes, welcoming people, the glorious sandy beaches of Lake Malawi, plenty of wildlife and great weather all year round, Malawi in itself makes the perfect holiday destination. So make sure you reward yourself after all your hard work by squeezing in a trip to the lake or even hop over to South Luangwa NP in Zambia for a discounted safari – one of the best safari destinations in Africa!
